This image really stuck with me...when I read it, it was one of these striking images that I love in McCarthy's work. This image is different from others I have remembered- very delicate and sad. I thought of drawing this one but I am glad you did.
You could do it too! Though I know for me it would be hard not to be overly influenced by the first rendering of the scene. I was really struck by this image also, its delicacy, as you said, which I think came mostly from the verb "fluttered".
The rabbit's face in the fist one makes me think it is planning something and then the second picture is its plan.
